What is Scaredtober?

Published in Movies on Oct 1, 2023

TL;DR: Scaredtober is an event where I watch and share a scary movie for every day in October.

I love movies and especially scary ones. Scaredtober is my way of celebrating them, Halloween, and the month of October. Which Halloween is by far my favorite holiday.

For Scaredtober, I do my best to provide a good mix of movies to watch. They can cover any subgenre of horror or even include some of those questionable horror movies, like Jaws. Anything that has an element of fear or is a satire of it is something I'll consider. I also include a few that are either new that year or simply just new to me. I try not to repeat too many movies from year to year, but if I want to watch something really bad I'll include it. I always try to include some of my favorites and classics too. The only tradition beyond Scaredtober itself is to end the month with my boy Michael Myers by watching one of the films from the Halloween franchise.

What's your favorite scary movie? Do you have recommendations? I'd love for you to participate, checkout one of my Scaredtober posts here on the site or hop on my Discord to discuss.

A Brief History

Watching a scary movie for everyday in October started in 2010. I didn't document it anywhere, I just watched the movies. In 2012, I got the idea to share what I was watching and see if anyone else enjoyed the films. So, I started posting them to Facebook and interacting with my friends and family. I called it Dreadtober at the time, but that shortly changed in 2018 to Scaredtober (for unique hash tag purposes) when I started posting the movies publicly on Twitter. I gave TikTok a try in 2022 and enjoyed making short videos announcing the movie for the day, but I don't know if I'll have the time for that moving forward.
